Luis had just moved to Nice, France, for work, and Abigail was travelling alone to celebrate her 26th birthday in February. We met during a group pub crawl—I went with a friend I met at the hostel, and Luis came alone. He sat right in front of me, and neither of us expected more than a fun night with people from different backgrounds. Since I didn’t speak French, I mostly stuck with those who spoke English—except for Luis, who somehow joined our group.
